Hi Lisa - Everyone is sharing wonderful advice. I will chime in as a newcomer to llamas. I sheared my llama girls for the first time last spring. As Marty McGee Bennett would say, "remember to breathe." She has some wonderful advice about methods fo…

Loving life with llamas in north central Indiana

We raise llamas on our Dawn of Promise Farm in Battle Ground, Indiana. We started showing llamas in 2009. We have been active in raising and training Connemara ponies, the native pony of western Ireland, for years and find that many of our experiences with ponies translate well. Thank you to everyone who so openly shared their farms and ideas with us as we set out to learn more about llamas. We hope to meet more llama enthusiasts and look forward to learning more about shearing and uses of the wonderful llama fiber.

Hi, and welcome to the wonderful world of llamas! If you are interested in visiting another farm, we are located just south of Indianapolis on I-74. We love to have visitors! Feel free to ask me any questions that you may have about llamas! They are really unique animals to raise, and their fiber is amazing!

I attended the Indiana State Fair on Saturday and shot a number of photos while watching the 4-H llama showmanship and obstacle classes as well as a few open classes. It was a wonderful day! If you'd like to see the photos from the day as well as images I've taken while visiting llama farms, you can find several of them at my flickr site in this collection: http://www.flickr.com/photos/purduepics/sets/72157606551114353/

Vickie, my family has been raising llamas for almost 10 years now. We used to raise pure bred nubian goats for many years. I feel that llamas was not only an upgrade in the type of livestock, but a change of lifestyle. There are so many things you can do with llamas and it is a great PR animal for schools. I have met several horse breeders that have merged into llamas due to the size of the animal and the fact that they no longer ride their horses.

Steven - Thanks for the note. I'm looking forward to learning more about llamas here and hopefully adding a few to the farm some day. Vickie
