That's what I thought, but I'd love to hear what you learn from Ohio State. I think we're finally out of the woods with our little girl. She's starting to gain 0.5-1.0# per day (more when she can't run around outside), so I think she's getting enoug…

Emaly, The sooner it's given the better, but I'll check with Ohio State and see what they say - stay tuned. Barb

Barb, Thanks for easing my worry a bit. We started weighing the cria with a more accurate scale tonight, and it appears that she's gained 0.5 lb each of the last 2 days, which is a start. She wasn't even due until this weekend, so we're going to giv…

Virginia, I agree with Karen on the use of whole milk over milk replacer and the IgG testing. I've also added a small amount of Karo syrup (less than a teaspoon) to help with energy and warmth but only for one bottle/day for 3 days; more than that…

Emaly, As you say, the one pound/day is a guideline. I know from working with Dr. Lakritz at Ohio State that any gain is positive and it isn't necessary to get upset if none is seen even 3-4 days after birth. Llamas are individual just as humans an…

I have a related but somewhat off-topic question, what is the minimum weight gain expected by a cria that is healthy? I know the rule of thumb is 1 lb per day, but is less gain (but still an overall gain each day) acceptable? I have a week old cria…

Transfuse him and then I like to use Whole milk with a little milk replacer added. Easier on their stomach than milk replacer alone.

Thanks, Karen. He is nursing periodically on another Mon, but not enough. What about milk replacer, as well as plasma? VV
October 6, 2009
Sounds like he could need a plasma transfusion, have you checked his IGG? If mom did not have much to start with he did not get much colostrum. Even if he gets enough milk now he won't thrive. That could be what he needs.

Inadequate Milk Production

I have two cria born within two days of one another ~ one mom had lots of milk and the baby is thriving. The other mom has low milk production and the cria, at two weeks of age, is not gaining weight like the other cria. What kind of milk supplements would anyone suggest? I have never had to supplement a cria before.

Glad you are happy with the coats--we always love to hear that! I've never actually seen a suri llama in person; yours look like beautiful animals.

I am eager to see what he produces for you! Be sure to post a blog of some sort on Lama Journal when they are born and it will help promote him and his offspring. Every time you have a new cria of his born, just add to your blog. Just a thought :-)

Hey Virginia! I didn't realize that you had purchased FFF Chiri~O from Jim and Victoria. He's a phenomenal suri male. Congrats on your purchase. I am sure he will be a great asset to your breeding program.

Hi Virginia,
It was good to hear from you. We are excited about the Celebrity. This is the first time we have consigned to the sale. We hope that the economy doesn't affect the sale too much. We still talk about your reaction when Sidel brought so much at the sale. We thought you were going to pass out on stage! :) That would be a dream come true for us or any small farm to have several of the big guys fighting over your llama. Hope to see you at the show.

P.S. Our son, Steven, developed this website for the enjoyment of the llama community.

reliable transport - Mitchell Ramsey seems to do a lot of coast to coast with stops along the way - very professional - I found him on tthe Yahoo Alpaca transport group. My correspondent in IN was also impressed with his service - cell 918-244-5132
There is also a guy in Canada out west - AB maybe Green-someting -runs ads in ICQ - only way to go if you have to do trans-border as he is set up to do this.
