Yet another adventure I must face this spring. I'm sure as the time approaches I will have a lot of questions!
March 13
I have mini donkeys - they share a fence with the llamas, but I wouldn't keep them with the llamas.

Hi,   Question - does anyone out there also have mini donkey's and if so - do you house them with your llamas?   Thanks! lisa croslow sandy lane llamas lawrenceville, il

Hi Lisa - Everyone is sharing wonderful advice. I will chime in as a newcomer to llamas. I sheared my llama girls for the first time last spring. As Marty McGee Bennett would say, "remember to breathe." She has some wonderful advice about methods fo…

Hi everyone,   As I have pretty much zero skills when it comes to fiber, I have some skeins of yarn that was processed from our alpaca herd that I would like to trade for rovings.  I sell the yarn for around $5-6 oz.  I have 100% cream colored white…

Hi Lisa! I pretty much agree with what Emaly has already said! I do want to add that a lot of what determines if you llamas will stand still during shearing or not has to do with how much they are handled and how comfortable they will be with the s…

I came at shearing from the opposite perspective... I've been shearing our llamas myself since I was 11, but the first time I watched a professional shear my fiber alpacas I was freaked out! The alpacas and llamas just react very differently to the…

Ok folks, after coming over to the llama side after being on the alpaca side of things - I have always had a professional shearer come in and shear our alpacas by laying them down/stretching them out method.  Now then,  I am visualizing doing this w…

Hi Lisa ... we do remember you ! We "sold" our Babydolls for Miniature Llamas and don't regret it one bit ! Babydolls were "cute" ... but can't even begin to compare with our Llamas ! Thanks for including us ...

Well, I can't say I have a "farm" (yet). I'll have my first two llamas at the end of the month, so there isn't much to see, but I too like some Texas Roadhouse! I'm anxious for any advice and talking llamas, that's for sure! If it's after October 31 I will be beginning my new lifestyle and I couldn't be more excited about it! I was actually looking forward to finding your place! I make several trips a year on 41 traveling to visit my family around Danville, Illinois. I do have plans to go to the show in Louisville on November 8th, as well. I hope to meet you soon! I would like to learn everything I can! I'm almost thinking I could of pimped myself out as a llama sitter, but I still want my own!

I think the general rule of thumb is to make sure that the cria's registration doesn't show an ancestor more than once. A registration shows out to 4 generations (parents, grand parents, great grand parents, great-great grand parents). So just to be on the safe side, I would try to avoid breeding 2 llamas that have the same ancestor in the first 4 generations (this would be 5 generations for the cria). Some people actually like to line breed, but I won't open up that can of worms. Emaly

That's always fun to do. Before long you'll be able to see a llama and know (generally) its ancestors- certain traits are very obvious in some lines. Ridge has fairly unrelated bloodlines (one of the many reasons that convinced me to buy him), so hopefully you'll get lucky! Ridge's ILR # is 261804 if you want to cross-reference bloodlines. Emaly

Getting to know nearby breeders is a great idea, and can be invaluable in the future. Just let me know if you have any questions about Ridge- I know he is thrilled at the prospect of more girls this fall! Emaly

Hi,
Thanks for adding me as your friend, and welcome to the wonderful world of llamas! It's nice to see new llama owners in our neck of the woods. If you're ever over towards Indianapolis, feel free to stop by for a visit. You've found some great looking girls- if they are in need of a "date" in the future, check out my Halter Champion suri-type boy, Ridge. I'm really trying to get more crias on the ground from him (have 3 fabulous ones so far), so we're offering some great deals on outside breedings. Enjoy your new llamas! Emaly
