"We're in the U.K. and don't have the great extremes of temperature parts of the U.S. have.  However, there are fewer llama shearers, so we have to fit into a shearer's schedule.  We sheared in the last week of June, and…"

Additonal supplements for a lagging cria

I have a 6 1/2 week old cria who seems to be lagging a bit behind the others I have had on the farm. All in all, we've been blessed to not have any problems with crias but there's always a first time. She did have a temp. a week ago and has gotten past that with some antibiotics, yogurt and pedialyte. She's back nursing like a champ. Just wanted to know if there's anything else I can do to help her along or just let the llama be a llama.

"Lisa, I just finished my 6th year of shearing my own llamas and others that are unable or don't have a place to take their kids (an alpaca shearing), lets see 130 this season. I learned with Double K's, go to complete clipper service.com.…"

"Mike, Same as you, we have been involved with llamas for 10 years. As the book goes, yes, morning hours are the times we've seen delivery. Maidens on the other hand, anything goes. I had one that delivered at 4 pm. Others wait till you leave…"

"You may have already found a place since you posted this. I use Premier 4000's with a 4 point cutter and 13 tooth comb. I have Premier sharpen all of those blades. I also have a Double K shearer which uses Andis Clipper blades. I send those to…"

"I wish we could find someone who could leave more fiber on! We can still get frost in May, so we wait until June to get ours sheared, and then they are virtually bald. I have seen our older alpacas shivering from the cold (40 to 50 degrees) for a…"

Shearing and how much to leave on

I do all my own shearing in May and June and use my Premiers that take the fiber down to 1/4 of an inch. I also travel around the front range area to llama owners that don't do their own or can't get to a big shearing day. I have had some clients that insist I leave 1.5 to 2 inches because they are at 9000 feet or they feel they're llamas will be too cold. Needless to say I have an opinion on that but want to know if anyone has input for me pro or con.
