All great ideas!! What about other members? Do you have spring events planned that you would like to share? Our club is working on many of the same ideas, parades and such. We also are planning a fundraiser at our local Tractor Supply store, we sell Krispy Kreme Doughnuts and promote our club. The TSC people are wonderful in supporting our kids, we try to attend all of their "Farm Day" weekends with our animals. We also volunteer with our YMCA at the summer youth events. The kids love to meet our llamas and other farm critters we bring! Another idea regarding the educational board idea ... we decorated our stalls at the WV State Fair with Q&A "foam board llamas" to educate the public and we had a club 4H video that ran on a loop all day to let everyone see what we did in the past year. We plan on using the same display at our county fair this year since it was a big hit in WV. I'd love to hear what everyone else has planned or has done in the past ... please share!

Our group is very excited to be hosting our first 4-H Fiber Invitational this July in conjunction with the Montana Fiber Round-Up here in Kalispell. This will be the weekend following the 4th of July which we are planning to take that time to target the public during that parade in handing out ice-pops and info sheets. We are also taking advantage of free posters and radio advertisements through local stations. Our leaders have made Peruvian-styled packs for our members' llamas and the public is beginning to recognize who we are at events. We are also working on several different educational boards to put up in our barn during fair in August. We would be interested in any ideas you may have as well! Thank you!

I currently put together a newsletter that goes out the first of every month to many different people in our area listing all upcoming events planned for our club. We also post frequently in our county 4-H newsletter. We have been taking advantage of all the parades we can possibly get in and will be in the upcoming St. Patrick's Day Parade here in town, of course llamas and members dressing the part!

Welcome Angela! Good luck with your 4H recruitment! I would love for you to share some of your recruiting ideas! Our club has been talking about some spring PR events and would love to know what others are doing!

Hello from Kalispell, MT. I am very excited to have found the Lama Journal! I am the organizatonal leader of the L.L.A.M.A. (Leaping Llamas and Marching Alpacas) 4-H Club here in Flathead County. We recently got our Charter and have been busy working hard building our club and recruiting members. I have found a lot of your comments very interesting!

Welcome Chantel! I just looked you up being a local Ohioan and looks like you are North of Mansfield? I am South of Grove City, so about an hour and 45 min. from you it looks like via mapquest. I'm sure we will cross paths someday within the ohio shows ... I'll be sure to pay attention and look you up!

This is a great idea! I know I could use ideas & suggestions from time to time with our 4-H group.
I think the thing I struggle with the most is keeping the kids coming to meetings & practice sessions. They are so involved in activities (school, sports, church, 4-H...etc) that they get burned out, I think. But I have found that if I can get the parents involved & interested, it is easier to keep the kids coming too. Our activities have really evolved into being for enthusiasts of all ages, while mentoring the kids thru their 4-H projects.
I would like to add a "special needs" class to our county show this year. I saw one at Cindy Ruckman's show this past summer, and it was really good. The kids were thrilled to get to do something like that. The expressions on their faces just said it all. Kudos to Cindy!!!!

Hey! Thanks for the invite, Chris! I'm just getting started "officially" cause Tray just turned 9 and even though he's been in CloverBuds for 3 years and we've been taking llamas to our County Fair for exhibition. This year he's a 4-H'er I'm offering a Llama project for our Cabell County 4-H'ers. I introduced the idea during our Sept. meeting and had lots of interest. Now to figure out what to do next :-) Contracts for the kids, Leasing agreements, What requirements they will have etc. Our Cabell County Fair Board LOVES the llamas and are all on board!
Any and ALL suggestions would be so appreciated.

Smiles ;-)

Great suggestion! I also used the Rocky Mtn. book but now use the Ohio book as a reference book. I just did some activity books for each age level. The Ohio State book is very good.

Wow, 18 years, KUDOS!!!! Ohio now has an "official" resource and project book that was approved by the Ohio State Extension office for use through out Ohio and is available on their website ... http://estore.osu-extension.org/index.cfm I started out with the Rocky Mountain Llama association's 4H manual. I think the newer Ohio version is a bit more up to date and follows our state's overall guidelines to keep the kids in tune with other livestock projects. There are a lot of great resources available to get you started Petra!
