We have a small herd of lovely lady llamas. They have free choice grass hay and forage available and receive about 1 pound of feed per head a day. Which seems ok -- but is it? When we started with llamas I went the our local TSC, where we get our other livestock feed, and ordered llama feed. The only choice they had available was Nutrition Llama & Alpaca Concentrate which costs 19.99 for 50 lbs.
I'm just wondering what others use and if they have found something better for their animals. Any input is welcome! :-)
Our girls range in age from 1-6 years. I think one may be expecting but I'm not sure (our sire passed from heat stress within a month of their meeting).
Hi Tami,
I think the amount you are feeding each day is okay. We have had good luck with Mazuri llama regional. It is a purina product, so any feed store that carries Purina should be able to get it. We get ours from Belton Feed and I know you can get it from Temple feed as well. I bet there is a feed store in Killeen that has it too. It costs about $12.70 a bag, but it may depend on the quantity you order. Watch your pregnant girl in this heat. Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any other questions.
Thank you, Courtnee, for your input. You're right about the heat, it's certainly taking its toll on us. I give the girls electrolytes mixed with lemonade to help battle the effects. My husband teases me about my "llama lemonade" but the llamas enjoy it. I would love to come and see your animals one day -- I hope your invitation is still good, I've got your number. :-)
Thanks again -- as always!
Your welcome! The electrolytes are a great thing to give the llamas right now. Of course you can still come visit and see my llamas. They are in Colorado until October. We will be having several babies this fall as well. You can check out the website (www.sapavecoranch.com) to see the crias we have had born in Colorado this summer. Have a great day!
