we just had a little red boy out of a LW 2006 red girl bred to a black curly HW male - looks kind of suri now and not lofty like some semi-suris - anyone else think they've seen this?

Meg, it could be a silky fleece. If you look up the flece definitions in the ILR Show Division, the main difference between single coat without crimp and suri is the weight of the fleece and whether there is loft.

I had a true single coat without crimp born two years ago (Sinbad of Pinnacle Peak), and my first thought was "suri". Actually, his yearling fleece has been moved by fleece judges from single coat to suri in fleece shows, but it is single without crimp. I have had this specifically verified by Fran Soukup. But suri and single without crimp can be mistaken for each other. As it has been explained to me, the weight of the fleece will tell you if it is suri or single, as single without crimp has a lower weight/density than suri. Also, a suri fleece will lay flat on the table, whereas a single without crimp will lay in a heap. This may or may not help you, as I am sure you are not ready to shear him just yet. ;^)
