We have a recently (as in last week) gelded male who came to us as the result of an HS seizure in south GA. It appears that the primary reason this guy survived is that he jumped out to forage and then jumped back into the enclosure to be with the herd.
There was evidence of 32 llamas in the field - skeletons, decomposed bodies, and 8 emaciated survivors. A young cria has since been euthanized so we are down to 7 who are now safely housed and under veterinary care.
This guy has had a rough time and we would love to find somewhere he can be safely housed and prevented from roaming. Now that he has been gelded that will hopefully help. We are also hoping that a regular feeding routine will ease his urge to roam as well. He is currently being housed in (very) temporary quarters but cannot stay there. Plus it is restrictive for him - he needs to be part of perhaps a bachelor herd on a large pasture or at the very least, in some sort of pen along with a buddy or two that is rigged with elevated ribbons or webbing to present a heightened visual barrier.
If anybody has any ideas, please feel free to contact me or Karen Pihera, DVM (kpihera@aol.com)
Thanks!
