Would like to begin a small business of bringing a couple of our llamas to preschools and do a little demo about llamas. Is there a market for this? If so, what is the best way to begin and what is a fair amount to charge?
I would think that you would need to have your llamas certified as therapy animals (Delta is the only organization that I know of that certifies llamas - they must pass a test/be evaluated). This for insurance purposes. I have a therapy dog I take to many schools, preschools, etc., but she is TDI registered (Therapy Dog) and is covered by insurance through them. It is pretty mandatory here in NYS. I've never heard of anyone charging to take a llama/dog/any animal to a preschool...usually it's on a volunteer/educational basis. Or perhaps that's just how it is in my area.
I have traveled to many schools with llamas and it was always a volunteer effort on my part. I visited schools of my children and my families children and never had to get insurance. I am not sure if that has changed today.
My wife and I have done so PR work at differt thing and have got paid for some of them. We have the people that want was to come to location to sign a release before we make apperance. We get $75.00 hour buy has to be at least 2 hours
I have done lots of school, nursing home, church group, etc. visits with the llamas, but all on a volunteer basis. most if not all of those programs simply do not have the budget for anything extra.
I have been rather successful as far as money goes for doing demos at local store openings. As I'm sure you are aware, llamas tend to draw a crowd & that is what business owners are looking for. I print up some informative flyers & hand them out whenever I see a new shop opening, usually charging $50/hour-3 hour minimum.
This also gives me an opportunity to pass out my business cards & fiber samples. I bring gate panels & a carpet, decorate with balloons, etc. Turns out to be a pretty fun day!
