Lama Journal Alpaca Llama Social Network

.

My name is Cathy Bradford of Discovery Llamas. I 've been working with llamas for the past 11 years in many capacities. I started out with a friend who had a llama, started showing them in 4-H, then moved up through the ALSA ranks, worked with rescue llamas and have become very involved with training. My hope is to begin putting my foot in the door with some of the organizational aspects in the next couple of years!

Later this spring a friend of mine and I will be making a cross country trip from Ohio to Wyoming ( by way of Indiana, Illinios, Iowa, and Nebraska) to work on a pack llama ranch (Highline Trails!). We have come up with an idea that we think would be fun for a lot of people. We thought it would be fun to visit with some farms and llama people along the way. It would be an interesting way to connect with people who obviously share the same interests! We look to be traveling in late March or early April. I'm not sure of the farms that would be along the way, but just wanted to see what other llama enthusiasts thought of our idea! I Hope everyone is surviving all of the crazy weather and tragic circumstances that this winter is throwing at us!

We did it with two alpacas...traveled 7000 miles in a month, visiting farms and historic sights and downtown cities...eleven states and about fifty cities including capital buildings and governor mansions, nightclubs and boxing events, NASA, Bunker Hill and Niagara Falls, several college campuses, among many places. When visiting other places, you need to know about things in each area, including possible diseases caused by things that you might be unintentionally carrying from one farm or woods to another farm. Ticks, fleas and jumping things plus bacteria can stay in your clothes, be picked up from animals and from plants, and adversely affect others....but all things like that can be prevented through smart washing of clothes and being careful about handling things.

Thanks a lot for the advice Chuck. It is something I will have to keep in mind. It sounds like your trip was great, lots of sites to take in! We are kind of planning things on the fly right now, as ideas pop into our heads we try to make them into reality. Our trip will only be about 5 days in total so we won't have enough time to do a lot of sight seeing, but we plan to take in whatever comes our way!
